From the náměstí Míru Square in Klatovy head along Balbínova Street (near the church and the Black Tower) to the catacombs. After seeing the catacombs you can go visit the wonderful Deanery Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, to which you get from the square along Křížová Street (corner with the building of Komreční Bank).

    The city was founded by Ottokar II. around 1260. The dominant of the square is Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Construction of the church began in 1656 and today's appearance is from the year 1810. Under the church, in the catacombs, were buried local Jesuits monks and prominent citizens. Sophisticated ventilation system of the catacombs caused a natural mummification of the dead bodies. Another feature of the square is the 81 meters high Black Tower, which was built in 1557.

    Crypts under the Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary and St. Ignatius were built as part of the church and grammar school in the years 1656-1676. They became the burial place of members of the Jesuit order and its benefactors from the local nobility, townsmen and troops. between the years 1676-1783 have been buried here over 200 bodies. In 1784 were burials in the crypts banned by Josef II. The most important buried person here is the Father Adalbert Chanovský of Dlouhá Ves, a missionary in southwestern Bohemia from the first half of the 17th century.
