The city was founded by Ottokar II. around 1260. The dominant of the square is Jesuit Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. Construction of the church began in 1656 and today's appearance is from the year 1810. Under the church, in the catacombs, were buried local Jesuits monks and prominent citizens. Sophisticated ventilation system of the catacombs caused a natural mummification of the dead bodies. Another feature of the square is the 81 meters high Black Tower, which was built in 1557.
